Diversity, inclusion and race

What’s in a name he asked

What’s in a color I said

Black, white, or shades of brown

All can be painted by one of our own

We sit, we stand, we laugh, we cry

Why didn’t you let him breathe

When he said he didn’t want to die

Would you have listened

And taken action

If I was a different color

Or would it have mattered

If I had bleached

Would you have treated

Me different

Treated me as a human

Without putting me in jail

If I put on a white face

Or would you then have said

It’s not your color it’s your race

It is justice I demand

For I am first a human

With a sound mind

And a rational head

Justice to be treated fairly

Justice to be treated equally

As my peers with a white face

Would you watch them

as you watch me?

Would you monitor them

as you monitor me?

For I am a human

Not an animal in a zoo

It is justice I demand

Oh why does it shock you?

Is justice only meant to

Serve the ones in command?

George Floyd is not dead

He lives amongst us

Sadly he paid the price

For justice to be heard

Why did it have to come to this

Did the nation have to burn?

When they could have

Just arrested them instead

I paid my price

For what I don’t know

Maybe for my color,

Maybe for my race,

Or maybe for the demand

To just be included

And now it’s time

For them to pay the price

The price for all the injustice

For justice is the price

You pay for peace
